Understanding Common Converter and Drive Harmonics, Cost Analysis and Mitigation Techniques

Introduction

Non linear loads such as photocopiers, personal computers, laser printers, electronic lighting ballasts, uninterruptible power supplies, and variable frequency AC motor drives are increasingly causing harmonics. This course outlines the effects of power system and low/high frequency converter generated harmonics and voltage transients on common electrical equipment. It provides guidance for Converter/drive system design for mitigation of the hazardous effects due to the transients and harmonics. Actual occurrences in industrial environments with some practical solutions are discussed. A hand on tutorial module provides a good insight into the power system and drives harmonics troubleshooting. Some common power system simulation software will be shown to carry out some case studies. It will provide the participants a hands-on understanding of the problem. Finally, some state of the art unity power factor AC & DC drives are suggested to totally avoid the harmonic problems.

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the participants with a-clear understanding of the causes and effects of harmonics on a power or distribution system. Simple methods for the identification and recognition of its problems will be offered. Methods for harmonic measurement and analysis for harmonic control and reduction will be discussed. The requirements and limits put forward by various harmonics standards will be highlighted together with the problems associated with its control. A hands-on session on converter/drives harmonics troubleshooting is be conducted.
